If you’re dreaming of wild Africa—untamed landscapes, vast savannahs, and up-close encounters with majestic wildlife—Chobe National Park in Botswana should be at the top of your list. Famous for its massive elephant population and spectacular river safaris, Chobe offers an unforgettable safari experience that rivals any in Africa.
Where Is Chobe National Park?
Located in northern Botswana, Chobe National Park lies close to the borders of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, making it an easy addition to a broader southern African adventure. The gateway town, Kasane, is well-connected and serves as a base for many safari tours and excursions.
Why Chobe is Africa’s Elephant Capital
Chobe is often referred to as the “Land of the Giants,” and for good reason. The park is home to an estimated 120,000 elephants—the largest concentration of elephants anywhere in Africa.
During the dry season (May to October), these gentle giants gather in incredible numbers along the Chobe River, creating dramatic wildlife scenes. Watching dozens, sometimes hundreds, of elephants drinking, bathing, and playing in the river is an awe-inspiring experience.
Other Wildlife You’ll See
While elephants steal the show, Chobe is a Big Five destination. You can also encounter:
- Lions resting under trees or stalking prey
- Leopards slinking through the underbrush
- Buffalo in large herds
- Hippos wallowing in the river
- Crocodiles sunning on the banks
- Antelope species, including sable, kudu, and impala
- Over 450 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers
The Magic of Chobe River Safaris
One of Chobe’s signature experiences is the Chobe River Safari—a tranquil boat ride that brings you incredibly close to the action. Unlike land-based game drives, river safaris offer unique perspectives and photo opportunities.
Picture elephants swimming across the river, hippos snorting just meters away, or fish eagles diving for prey. The slow pace of the boat allows for quiet, immersive wildlife viewing, and the sunsets over the water are simply unforgettable.
Best Time to Visit Chobe National Park
- Dry Season (May to October): Peak safari season. Wildlife is easiest to spot as animals congregate around the river. Minimal rainfall and cooler temperatures make for comfortable game viewing.
- Green Season (November to April): Lush landscapes and fewer tourists. Great for birding and photography, but wildlife is more dispersed.
